Red, White, and Blue Foods for a Patriotic Gathering

It’s the season for patriotic holidays. Memorial Day is at the end of May, then Fourth of July, and Labor Day to end the summer. Red, white, and blue are the colors of the United States. When planning a gathering, incorporating red, white, and blue foods are a great way to embrace the theme. When they are spread out, they can function as decor as well. 

Red Foods

Out of all of the three categories, this is the most vibrant and prominent in nature. Feel free to put out produce in its original form for a beautiful display. 

Here are some foods that are naturally red:

  • Tomatoes 
  • Watermelon 
  • Cherries
  • Pomegranate 
  • Red Bell Peppers

Below are dishes that incorporate the color red. 

Cherry Salsa 

This is a light and refreshing salsa. Serve with plain or cinnamon sprinkled chips. 

Watermelon Fruit Salad

This is another light option. Combine watermelon with fresh mint for a simple dish. 

Spaghetti

For a main course, make this tomato sauce to serve with spaghetti. 

Enchilada

Want a main course with slightly more spice? This enchilada dish will work perfectly. 

White

Most naturally white items in nature have a colorful outer layer with white inside. Make other dishes from these items to see the inside color or place these items by themselves. 

Here are some white food items:

  • Lychee
  • Pears
  • Potatoes
  • Apple
  • Popcorn
  • Rice
  • Coconut 
  • Pasta (not completely white, but it works)

This drink can be made in a batch for a large group. Make it non-alcoholic.

This is different from the standard way of making potato salad. It gives an extra crunch with great flavor.

Roasted Garlic Bucatini Alfredo

Consider Alfredo for a main dish. This white sauce will look great on your table. 

Herby Lemony Couscous 

While not entirely white, this light and lemony dish will add great balance. 

Garlic Herb Baked Cod

A white fish dish is perfect to have. It’s not too heavy and beautifully displays the color white. 

Rice Pudding 

This is a great dessert to incorporate. It can be eaten chilled or warmed. 

Blue

Creativity is needed to incorporate blue foods as there aren’t many found in nature. These items will be blue or purple hued.

  • Grapes
  • Plumbs
  • Blue corn
  • Blue crab
  • Blue cheese
  • Spirulina
