Unexpected Patriotic Places to Visit in the U.S. This Summer

Summer is full of patriotic holidays. There is the Fourth of July, which celebrates the United States’ freedom from British rule. A couple of weeks before that is Juneteenth, which celebrates the enslaved American’s freedom from slavery. And of course, the unofficial start and end of the season, Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Summer is also the time for trips, vacations, and travel. It’s a great time to explore patriotic locations and learn more about the United States. There are more typical locations like Washington, DC, the nation’s capital and Pennsylvania, where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution was discussed and signed. However, we’re going to explore some less traditional patriotic locations to visit during the summer, or frankly, any time of the year.

These patriotic places will explore the varied and vast history of America, but don’t worry, if you’re not a super big history buff, these locations provide ample opportunities to enjoy yourself beyond the historical nature.

Galveston, TX

This is the site where Juneteenth originated. It was in Galveston that the last enslaved people learned of their freedom in 1865. Beyond this historical feature, Galveston is an island off the coast of Texas, so there are many beaches to explore. Take time to relax and enjoy the scenery, ocean air, and gulf coast seafood.

Jackson, MS

Most likely the least known on this list, but is packed with large impact, Jackson is the capital of Mississippi. Visit the renowned Civil Rights Museum and Museum of Mississippi History. There is also the Medgar Evers Home Museum. Mississippi is steeped in culture. With Jackson nicknamed the city of soul, you can find warmth, community, and hospitality in various restaurants, outdoor activities, and cultural explorations.

New Orleans, LA

This is a city full of French influence, so you may be asking why it’s on this list. New Orleans is a port city at the mouth of the Mississippi River, which was essential for commerce and livelihood in early American History. New Orleans is a great place to visit for a less traditional approach to a patriotic place, but it still has a great American impact.

Delaware

Delaware is probably not your first though when thinking of a vacation, but it will surprise you. This is the first state that gained statehood in the United States, so it’s a great patriotic location to visit. There are beaches and charming small towns to explore.

Atlanta, GA

Georgia, as a whole, is a state with vast historical attributes. Atlanta, being the state’s largest city, has a host of activities and experiences to cater to most people. There is the historic East Point neighborhood and various Civil Rights locations. For the outdoorsy, there are various trials for hiking and walking. Eateries and other cultural explorations are these too.
