How to Sew a Keychain

This is week five of the 10 week sewing challenge. We are learning how to sew a keychain.

As with the previous projects, this has multiple variations. This will focus on the simplest variation.

Other variations include filling the keychain poly fill for a bit of cushion or sewing around the edge with a satin stitch.

This keychain can be given as a gift. It’s simple enough to sell at a craft fair, or you could make it to use some scrap fabric and decorate your keys.

Written Instructions to Sew a Keychain:

Step 1

Create a pattern from copy paper of the desired shape and size of your keychain. This example is heart shaped. Cut out a strip that is 4 1/2 inch x 1 inch

Step 2

Cut out two pieces of fabric and two of interfacing for the keychain.

Step 3

Cut out one fabric and one interfacing of the strip.

Step 4

Iron on the interfacing to the wrong side of each fabric.

Step 5

Fold the long sides of the strip inward 1/4 inch on each side and press.

Step 6

Edge stitch each side of the strip.

Step 7

Fold the strip in half along the short side and press to create a loop. String the keyring through the loop.

Step 8

Place the heart shapes (or whichever shape you chose) wrong sides together. The front side of the fabric should face upward on both sides.

Step 9

Sandwich the folded strip between the two hearts, leaving a 1 1/2-2 inch loop. Clip the three together at the top and along the sides of the two hearts to keep in place.

Step 10

Sew along the perimeter of the heart about 1/8-1/16 inch away from the edge.
