Step 1

Cut out a rectangle that is 4.5 inches x 19 inches. This can be measured along the fold of the fabric. To do so, cut 9.5 inches for the width along the fold. When opened, it will be a total of 19 inches.

Step 2

Fold the strip in half along the long side with right sides facing together. Pin to secure. The top should be the two raw edges and the bottom should be the folded edge.

Step 4

Sew the pinned side with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Begin sewing about 1 inch front the top of the opening and stop sewing about 1 inch from the bottom of the strip.

Step 5

Turn the strip right side out. You will now have an enclosed circle with both ends open.

Step 6

Take the two ends (the 4.5 inches sides) and bring them together with right sides facing. Pin them.

Step 7

Sew the two ends together with 1/4 inch seam allowance. You will now have an enclosed circle with a small opening.

Step 8

Cut an elastic strip 8.5 inches.

Step 9

Add a safety pin to the end of the elastic to be able to pull it through the loop.

Step 10

Feed the elastic through the circle opening, pushing the safety pin through. Secure the end of the elastic with the pin and continue pushing the safety pin side until it reaches the opening.

Step 11

When you’ve reached the opening with the safety pin side, unpin the other side to bring the two elastic ends together. Pin them together with the safety pin to test scrunchie. If it is not tight enough, pull the elastic more. If it is too tight, loosen the elastic.

Step 12

When you’ve reach the desired elastic size, sew the two ends of the elastic together and trim the excess.

Step 13

Fold in the raw edges of the opening of the scrunchie and edge stitch it close.
