This project will cover weeks 7 and 8 of the 10 Week Sewing Challenge. We are going to sew a dress. This is a simple A-line dress through Fabric-Store.com.
This dress was exactly what I needed as a versatile stable in my closet. Though it’s originally long sleeves, it’s light enough to wear most seasons in most climates. I changed the sleeves to be quarter length for more seasonal versatility.
This dress can easily transition from casual to dressy. Wear it with sneakers to run errands and throw on a denim jacket when it’s bit breezy out. You can also add a pair of heels, some jewelry, and a fun hair accessory to wear this during a girl’s night out to dinner.
This dress can even be a part of your workwear outfits. Add a blazer and flats (or heels if you wear them to work) to complete your outfit and work productively.
This dress can be sewn from a variety of fabric types; however, the instructions advise against knit fabrics. I sewed it from thrifted sheets. Depending on your fabric choice as it relates to print or color can alter how versatile this dress will be for your lifestyle.
The original pattern has long sleeves and is midi length. Feel free to shorten each of these if you would like to or lengthen the hemline.
I made a few adjustments to fit my preferences. The adjustments were simple and I was still able to follow the instructions.
Adjustments I made:
- Shortened the sleeves to ¾ length (I find this to be the most seasonally versatile)
- Shortened the hem (it still lands as a midi because I’m on the shorter side)
- Removed the front pocket (this is a personal style choice)
