Summer Sewing Challenge: Weeks 3-4
Welcome to week 3 of the 10 week sewing challenge where we are sewing easy, beginner friendly sewing projects. This week, we are going to sew gym shorts from the Purl Soho. This is a FREE sewing pattern!
Since this project takes a bit more time, it will cover weeks 3 and 4 of our 10 week challenge. This is the first clothing item in the challenge. How fun!
Keep in mind, if it takes you longer than 10 weeks to complete all of the projects, that’s perfectly okay. And, if you would like to skip some projects and move on to others, that’s okay too.
This is meant to be a fun, relaxing challenge to grow your skills and use up some extra fabric you may have lying around.

What I love about this pattern:
- it’s versatile
- it’s simple
- it’s fun
This is a gym short, but I wanted to dress it up slightly, so I used a slightly shear fabric for the main parts and standard cotton for the lining, waistband, and bias binding.
On their site, they have two versions: one lined and one unlined.
I chose to sew the lined version. Of course, you can sew which ever version you would like. Because the main fabric I chose was slightly sheer, the lined version worked for me.

Notes about the pattern. This pattern is only available in a standard 8.5 X 11 format. This pattern is not formatted for large A0 paper. That means it will require cutting and pasting/taping together. This pattern has few pieces, so the process doesn’t take very long.
What’s needed for this pattern:
- Fabric
- Bias Tape
- Elastic
- Thread
The instructions for this project on Purl Soho are pretty straight forward.
Here is the original pattern and here is the lined version.
Let me know what you think.
