Fall Sewing Essentials Every Beginner Should Have

Fall is one of the best seasons to sew. The cooler weather means more time indoors, which makes it the perfect excuse to stock up on cozy fabrics and start a few new projects before the holidays hit. Whether you’re prepping handmade gifts or just want to refresh your sewing space for the season, these fall sewing essentials will help you get started.

Below you’ll find some of my favorite fall fabrics and colors. Additionally, there are a few tools that make sewing thicker seasonal fabrics so much easier, and several project ideas to try this season. Projects range from quick beginner pieces to slightly more advanced ones. If you’re new to sewing, the Beginner Sewing Lessons course is a great place to build the basics before diving into any of these.

Fall fabric & materials

When considering fabric and materials for sewing during the fall season, think of textures like flannel or brushed cotton. Corduroy and wool make for great pieces as well. Warm fall colors like rust, olive, mustard, or burgundy set the mood. The addition of prints including plaid, leaves, or pumpkins create something fun.

Tools worth having

A walking foot: this will aid with sewing thicker fall fabrics like flannel or corduroy. You could even choose to sew with denim which would be a great fall choice.

Pinking shears: this helps to prevent frayed edges on cotton fabrics.

Fall workspace lamp: having adequate lighting around your work space is important. Additional lamps add a great moody feeling for fall.

Project ideas

Apron

for the delicious fall baking and cooking. Whether you’re trying out a new recipes on a simple Saturday afternoon or prepping for a large Thanksgiving gathering, an apron will come in handy to protect your clothes. Wearing one you made will create a beautiful experience.

A-line Skirt

Make this in a thicker fabric like denim or corduroy for warmth. Style it with knee high boots and a sweater. If you live in a warmer climate, mules with simple tee would work as well. This piece will be a staple in your fall closet and with it being sewn by you, it will make it that much more special.

Tote Bag

Take a roomy tote bag on your trips to the farmers market on a chilly fall morning or fill it with all of your go-to necessities while apple picking or frolicking through a park.

Placemat

Make a quilted version of a placemat using fall forward fabric square bundles or scrap fabric from previous projects. Use these placemats as a great conversation starter for your Friendsgiving or make them for someone else as a hostess gift.

Scrunchie

Make a satin or velvet version for fall. Of course you can use the scrunchy for your hair, but also as a small accessory to loop around your purse or clip to a keychain.
